How Can I Prepare for My Off-Roading Trip?
One of the most important steps in your off-road trip is the preparation! Before you leave for an off-road trip, you should be sure to research your destination so that you're familiar with the route, and so that you get the latest updates about any trail closures, or unusual obstacles like flooded areas or downed trees from any recent storms. You should also read up about your trail's policies on camping, allowed vehicles, and any other rules that may be specific to that site. Taking the time to do the proper preparation will help you feel confident on your drive, because you know where to go, and what to expect when you get there!
Who Has Right of Way on the Trails?
One thing that drivers might not think about on off-road trails is encountering traffic. When we say traffic, of course we don't mean the same kind of traffic you'd expect in a bustling city. However, off-road drivers can still encounter other folks out on the trail, driving all kinds of vehicles, or no vehicle at all. When you encounter another vehicle, be sure to use normal road rules, and keep to the right to let each other pass. If it's a narrow trail where one driver must yield, always let the driver going uphill have the right of way, as stopping while traveling uphill can cause drivers to get stuck. If you encounter cyclists or pedestrians, be sure to always give them a wide berth so that you don't risk a collision, especially if you're going around a tight corner. By following these simple rules, everyone can have a great time on the trail!
Use the Buddy System!
Any time you set out to explore a trail, remember to bring a buddy! When off-roading, the buddy system applies for both yourself, and your vehicle! In other words, you should always have more than one vehicle out on the trail, because it allows you to help each other out in case of an emergency. For example, if one driver gets stuck, you can use the other vehicle to tow each other out of a ditch or a muddy patch. Or, if something more serious occurs, it's always a good idea to have a second vehicle to go for help off-trail. Joining a Jeep Club or other off-road organization is a great way to meet fellow drivers, and go on group trips with like-minded people who also love to explore the great outdoors!
What Gear Do I Need for Off-Roading?
While planning your off-road trip, be sure to think about the gear you're bringing along with you. As we just mentioned, having a buddy is crucial in case you need to tow each other out when you get stuck. In order to do this successfully, you'll want your vehicle to be equipped with a winch, and have a winch strap that can handle the weight of the other vehicle. Other handy tools include a radio system in case cell service is unavailable, and an accessible map, whether that means a downloaded version that can be viewed offline on a tech device, or a paper copy.
